Unable to change the brightness after an update to Windows 10 is a common issue. In fact, graphics related issues are one of the most common problems that Windows 10 users face after an upgrade or a clean install of the operating system due to incompatibility. Fortunately, you don’t need to think about uninstalling your new Windows. In most cases, this problem can be solved by updating your graphic card, also called display card or display adapter.
Method 1: Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software
Hold the Windows Key and Press X. Choose Device Manager. In Device Manager, navigate to the Display adapters and Expand it. Under Display adapters, right-click your graphic card driver and choose Update Driver Software. In the resulting dialogue box, select Search automatically for updated driver software. Windows 10 will use your internet connection to search for a suitable updated driver. In many cases, Windows 10 will find and install the appropriate driver and you will get the best possible graphic performance. However, in some cases, Windows may not be able to find and install the appropriate driver. If your issue is persistent even after performing steps in this method, then proceed to Method 2 and download the driver manually.

Method 2: Manually Download Driver from the Manufacturer’s site
This is by far the best approach to take. Follow Method 1 to get to Display Adapters in Device Manager, and note down the exact name of your display adapter. Go to the manufacturer’s site, and search for it’s latest driver. Find it and then install it. Reboot PC and see if the brightness issue is now resolved.
Method 3: Using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
If your computer manufacturer has not released a graphic driver for Windows 10, you can use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. You will have basic display functionality, and your brightness control problem will be solved as well. However, you may have difficulty running graphic intensive applications like games and graphic editing software. Repeat the process described in method 1, and go to the Update Driver Software. Choose Browser my computer for driver software. Choose Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. In the list under Show compatible hardware, choose Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Click Next, and complete the process.
